Goals

Goals

After twenty five years, the Chang Gung University College of Medicine has an impressive roster of faculty members with diverse research interests and high productivity. Our biomedical research has contributed the University to become the top 400 university according to Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) and was enrolled among the top 11 University of Excellence in Taiwan and is the only private University on list in Taiwan.  This is in accordance with the goal of our college to pursue excellence in medical research.  In this regard, the College of Medicine and its affiliated paramedical departments are looking towards opportunities for collaborative research efforts with world-leading universities and research institutes in order to meet the challenge of solving diverse medical problems, such as cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and some other forms of chronic degenerative disease.

Teaching

The mission of education at the Chang Gung University College of Medicine is to train first-rate physicians with distinct professionalism, with a special emphasis on equipping them with a solid understanding of medical ethics, as well as capability of independent research. As an example, undergraduate students at the department of Medical Biotechnology and Laboratory Sciences were given the opportunity to enter laboratories, starting from the sophomore year and continuing until the senior year, to gain experience in conducting independent research projects under the support and guidance of faculty members. The final report, in the format of a scientific manuscript, should be completed and submitted to the advisory board for evaluation. Students were also required to provide an oral presentation to their peers and faculty and be subjected to questioning.  The teaching for medical students is supported by the use of advanced medical information system (PACS, Electronic medical records) to provide an efficient learning environment, correlation of didactic instruction with clinical practice, and the development of the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE).

In order to educate and shape our students to be “diligent, perseverant, frugal, and trustworthy” and well-versed in both theory and practice, we have instituted an extracurricular practicum system and been working closely with Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, the Formosa Plastics Group, and other institutions to conduct work-study programs. We continue to improve the quality of the teaching staff, equipment, and instruction, to engage students for more opportunities in humanity studies. In taking advantage of Formosa Plastics Group's abundant manufacturing and medical service resources, Chang Gung University College of Medicine aims to be a first-rate internationally renowned university that prepares high standard professional talents in the fields of medical science, high technology, and knowledge management.

Future direction for excellence in teaching skill is to develop more problem based learning modules featuring strong correlation between basic science and clinical medicine; to expand the utilization of multimedia educational resources; to establish a better teaching environment; to improve teaching skills and motivation and to recruit competent and experienced teaching professionals for high quality teaching.

Research

The College of Medicine is extremely well-equipped for diverse medical research for excellence since the establishment of our institution. While we have been continuously recruiting outstanding scholars and experts to join our faculty community, our faculty members have played active roles in national-level research projects sponsored by the National Science Council, National Institute of Health, and other organizations. Chang Gung Medical Research Fund also offers the option for additional intramural research grants. As a result, several of our faculty members have been awarded with excellent distinctions in research by the NSC and other governmental agencies and our faculty member Dr. Yun-Fan Liao, Dr. Fu-Chan Wei have been elected as member of the Academia Sinica, Taiwan. Our strength in biomedical research stand from a team of well-funded basic research faculty members to a very close collaboration with the clinical research branch of Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. Recently, Research Centers and Core Facilities were formed to integrate basic, translational and clinical research and to implement scientific investigation to patients and clinical practice. Molecular Medicine, Biosignature and Biomarker Development, Healthy Aging, Proton and Radiation Therapy, Chinese Herb, and Medical Education Research are active fields of interest in Chang Gung University College of Medicine. The significance of these research efforts includes the integration through mission-oriented research goals, to promote excellence in research and education, and to encourage international collaboration.  Future directions in research are to continue and expand the research centers for fundamental and translational research in cancer, in emerging viruses and pathogenic bacteria, in health and aging, as well as to integrate researchers of specific disciplines and to further establish new research centers in other translational areas. The goal is to strengthen collaboration between different centers and departments, and to reach out to collaborate with the world renowned universities/research institutes and to encourage our outstanding faculty to compete for national and international awards. The twenty first century is the era to integrate modern Western medicine and Chinese traditional medicine. The comprehensive future network and strategic planning are being done to implement new outlook for future medicine from Chang Gung University College of Medicine.
